Motocross in NZ

Motocross in New Zealand runs on purpose-built dirt circuits, from club tracks on farmland to venues that hold national rounds. A meeting is made up of timed practice and then a series of short races, with riders grouped by class — usually by engine size, age or grade — so juniors, women's classes, seniors and veterans each get their own starts.

Club days and practice days are the usual way in: they are shorter, closer to home and open to riders who are still learning race craft. Championship rounds, whether club, regional or national, follow a set series of dates and have stricter entry, licence and scrutineering requirements.

You will generally need a bike prepared for the track, full protective gear including a helmet, boots, goggles and body armour, and your own fuel, stand and basic tools. Many meetings need a current competition licence and an entry made in advance rather than on the day. Entry fees, licence and membership rules, gear standards and gate times come from the club or promoter running the meeting, so read their listing and contact them if anything is unclear.
