The Kiwi trail ride fundraiser
For decades, rural schools and communities have opened up local farms for a day of riding — and turned it into their biggest fundraiser of the year. The money pays for pools, playgrounds, school vans, trips and more.
Duntroon School — Danseys Pass Trail Ride
North Otago
Running since 2000. Started with about 350 riders, peaked at around 1,300 and now draws about 1,000 riders a year — more than 20,000 riders in total. The money has gone into classroom upgrades, the school pool, tennis courts, computers, school camps, ski trips and extra teaching support.
Five Forks School — Foothills Trail Ride
North Otago
19 years running, with more than 550 riders aged from 3 to nearly 80 in 2026. It's the school's one big fundraiser of the year, paying for pool upkeep, a bike shed, school trips, iPads — and in 2026 a new adventure playground and school van.
Waipawa School — Motorbike Trail and Track Ride
Tikokino, Hawke's Bay
A family day out with a trail ride loop through stunning scenery, an advanced option for experienced riders, and lunch included — adults $50, under-14s $30.
