About adventure rides in New Zealand
Adventure rides link public gravel roads, back-country routes and the occasional farm track into a day or a weekend of touring on a larger dual-sport or adventure bike. Organisers usually hand out a route sheet or GPX file with fuel stops and checkpoints rather than marking every corner, and riders travel in small groups at their own pace.
Routes often cross private land by arrangement or use remote roads where there is no cell coverage, so rides are run to a start time and a finish cut-off, and gates and river crossings are part of the day. Some events are single-day loops; others are multi-day rides with accommodation booked in advance.
A road-legal, registered and warranted bike is normally required, along with a full tank, a way to carry extra fuel on longer legs, tyres suited to gravel, wet-weather gear, food and water, and a way to navigate. Entry prices, bike requirements, group sizes and what is included are set by each organiser, so check the listing and their own page before you sign up.
